SPELLBRICK

Build words on the grid. They score by themselves.

Take turns writing letters on a big grid. When your letter finishes a real word in a straight line, the points are yours, and the longest new word wins the most. Play with friends, against the computer, or online, and build bigger words than everyone else.

Ways to play

Five games on one grid

Every way starts the same: a letter at a time, and every finished word scores for whoever finished it.

Classic

Just words. The purest way to play: write, finish, score.

Skill Brick

Star and ×2 boxes on the board, plus powers like Eraser, Skip Turn and Clear Area.

Teams

Two against two. Build on your partner's letters and share the points.

Jumpstart

The board starts with words already on it, so big words come from the first turn.

Rearrange

Everyone gets their own full board and 5 minutes to move letters into words.

SCOWL is derived from many sources, most of which are in the Public Domain. Data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) was also used.

All data from COCA comes from 3-gram data that is not freely available; however, the usage is within the rights given by the NDA that was signed when purchasing the data. More information on COCA is available at https://www.english-corpora.org/coca/.

The primary source of words for SCOWL comes from 12dicts and ENABLE2K. Both are in the Public Domain, but Alan Beale <[email protected]> deserves special credit as he is the author of 12dicts and a major contributor to ENABLE2K. In addition, he gave me an incredible amount of feedback and created a number of special lists in order to help improve the overall quality of SCOWL.
